Domestic dogs are not wild animals. They have been bred pets and companions, and they really want to please you. It is good news because it means that they can be trained (most of them) bite of bad habit.
It all starts with your puppy little, and how you interact with him. If you stay in control of your play and puppy show that you are the Alpha Dog (boss)--and stop when he bites or NIPs or if you make a loud noise when it hurts, puppy soon learns that the problem is not acceptable. Now comes the really important stuff-protecting children from getting bit from dogs. Don't let your children EVER play at eye level with puppy. If puppy lunging up means it usually they are trying to dominate, and it is never safe. Your children need to be more dominant than the dog at all times.
Older aggressive dogs pose a more serious problem.

You cannot afford a dog that can maim or kill anyone--especially children. If you believe your seriously aggressive dog can be retrained, a professional manager may be the answer.

Stop-do not Feed your puppy as
"Sam just loves these chocolate chip cookies," said puppy owners with pride.
"Well, you don't have to feed him these cookies" shot back sams coach. "You have to stop feeding your puppy your food."
How many of us love to feed our puppies all types of food to their detriment. We say that we love our pets but we send them to an early grave by the things we feed them.
Its true, puppies must be fed several times a day more than grown dogs. Four times a day are not rare. Consistency is the name of the game.
Moreover, help your puppy by consistently feeding him. If you feed him on a regular basis, he will give you a regular bowel movement. All helps with potty training.
Keep children away from Sam when he eats. Give fella space. Do you like people crowding around you when you eat? And keep in mind that if his feeding area is on one side of a room, put their litter area on opposite sides. How often do you eat your meal in the bathroom?
Honestly, what they call dog food today is shameful. Don't waste your money. Don't feed your puppy slop. One size fits all just doesn't cut it with dog food. Think about it. A puppy that's growing has different nutritional needs than a full grown dog.
Let me explain it here. I have a fast-growing 18 year old son. Our food bill for him will leave us in the poor house before long. My wife keeps saying he's a growing boy.
I wonder, did he eat so much. Those who can relate to what I say just give me a nudge with your computer. Yes! Thank You!
What's comedic is this. He is not a little fat. He is incredible trim and agile. On the other hand, when I look at food, seems my stomach get bigger.
I said to say this. Growing puppies (my son), have different nutritional needs than the big dogs (me). (Somehow, that big dog thing made me feel good.)
So with all these different brands out there vying for your dollars, which one do you choose? Well, lets start with a simple reply first. Sam has to want to. Watch puppy your for signs of stomach increasing size and Flatulence and regurgitations.
Is Sam from energetic breed of dogs? Do not feed the Sam high fat foods if he sleeps all day. And remember that presentation can mean a lot to your plate, but that doesn't mean much for its sign. More than likely Sam does not see the color anyway. He uses smell and taste.
Only a split shot. When does Sam eat? Do not touch his food. He will bite you nomatter who you are. Instincts tend to take over. He will bite the hand that feeds him, believe me.

Teach your puppy dog not to Bite
All puppies seem to want to bite and all puppies should be taught to change this habit. Much of the properties that you can find in your sweet puppy, such as Jump on you or nibbling on your arm, must be corrected before your dog becomes too large.
When a puppy is left in its natural environment, she will learn to govern the biting. The reason is if she bites too much her mother or her sibling will correct the dog. Because puppies are removed from the wild, it's up to you, the owner, to train your dog not to bite.
Let your puppy play with other puppies so they can learn from them what type of behaviour is permitted.
There are special classes for puppies sponsored by pet stores called puppy playtime and kindergarten. It can help your puppy with socializing with other canines and humans. When your puppy plays too rough and bites too much, they will fix her.
Always try to train your dog when it is still a puppy. This applies to bite education and training. You must have your dogs socialize with other dogs. A dog that does not have experience in dealing with other dogs can be hard to control and dangerous. Attempt to socialize your dog during the first 12 weeks of his life. The problem will continue into adulthood. Now you have a dog who, when a guest or other Member of the family walks into the House, will sit and remain calm. Your friends are looking forward to getting over, instead of avoiding to visit because they know that the dog will jump on them.
The teaching of your puppy that sits is the starting point for obedience training or just teach him tricks. He looks forward to learning from you because he has learned that he will receive the love he craves.

The right way to Leash training your puppy
Leash training should not be any problem at all. You can start by playing a simple follow-the-game leader the first day your puppy is in your home. Follow him and tell him what a good puppy he is. As soon as he is comfortable with this little game, reverse it by getting him to follow you for a while. Then call to him, teaching him his name at the same time. Do what you can to get his attention as whistling, applauding and praise. You'll also bend down and extend your arms to get him to come to you.
In approximately one week your puppy will follow you just about everywhere you go. It is time to add a light leash. A view of leads is a good and affordable starter collar and Leash combination for rapidly growing puppies. Insert the leash on him and follow him wherever he goes, at the same time keep the Leash Loose. If you are taking him outside from day one, start with the leash on each time you take him outside and play "follow-the-leader inside the House.
Follow him, let him sniff around, explore, and to ensure that it is secure and within its borders. After about a week, he'll happily walk and follow or walk on a Leash and follow. Each time you take him outdoors, encourage him to follow you as you did at home. Play tug-of-war will not get him to move if he feels locked up. However, if you bend down, extend your arms to the side and use your voice, he will be happy and run right for you.
When your puppy learns to follow you on a leash, you are now ready for the next step. The next phase Couplers training will have a strong positive effect on the way he bonds to you. You can do this exercise inside or outside your home: Tie the leash to your belt and have him follow you wherever you go. He can accompany you while you wash your car, water plants or while cleaning the House. Your puppy will then become literally and figuratively close to you.
First, you may need to give him some encouragement to come. In all cases, will he catch pretty quickly that he is related to you. He will accept the bond and walk along with you everywhere. You can then bind him for longer periods and give him your close business while you teach him to stay close to you and watching you he will learn to keep the eye you and to identify with you. This type of exercise will create a meaningful bonding effect between you and your dog.
Remember to halt when he mouth or bites on his Leash. Specifically, say ' no ' and take the Leash out of his mouth without playing tug-of-war. If he persists, repeat the word "no", followed by a firm but gentle tug upward with leash to liberate it from his mouth.

You may not be able to stop puppyies need to chew and soothe their pain, but you can help him focus his chewed on more constructive materials.
To train your puppy to stop chewing on household items, give him a multitude of chew toys. Don't forget your puppy has always a chew toy available wherever you go. For best results, your puppy is restricted to a small part of the House and has plenty of toys in the vicinity. Your puppy should be around with as little furniture and other tempting as possible makes your efforts much easier.

Dog Bite Prevention
Dog attacks are reaching epidemic proportions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that 4.5 to 4.7 million dog bites take place in the United States alone. Of these cases, approximately 756,000 require medical attention.
The majority of dog bite victims are children age 10 and under. Others susceptible to dog attacks are the elderly, postal carriers and others who routinely make "house calls" such as meter readers. The commonly held myth that strays are the culprits of most dog attacks is a fallacy. The reality is, the perpetrator of most dog bites are not strays, but the family dog. In fact, you are more likely to be attacked by your own dog or the dog of your friend or neighbor. The stereotype of a vicious dog lurking in the alleyway, ready to pounce on an unsuspecting victim, needs to be dispelled. Only then, can the issue of dog bites and their prevention be adequately addressed.
Statistics by the CDC show that the number one indicator of dog bites is neutering. Non-sterilized male dogs are three times more likely to bite than their neutered counterparts. Properly socializing and training one's pet is also crucial in the prevention of dog bites. This is most assuredly a preventable problem as the major cause of dog bites is the irresponsibility of the dog's owner.
As a dog owner or potential dog owner, there are ways to guard against the possibility of you, your children, neighbors or friends being attacked. Becoming an informed pet owner is the first step to being a responsible pet owner.
What Can You, the Pet Owner, Do to Guard Against the Possibility of Dog Bites?
o Due to the high incidence of dog bites in younger children, it is recommended that you wait until your child is at least 4 years or older before bringing a dog into the home.
o Socialize your pet. Start when he/she is a young puppy so that they will not fear or be uneasy around other people, animals, events (family gatherings) and places (the park). This should be done gradually. Little by little, expose your pet to different situations under circumstances that are as controlled as possible.
o Neuter your pet. As stated above, a neutered dog is three times less apt to bite.
o Before obtaining a pet, consider the breed carefully. A veterinarian would be an invaluable source of information. They could inform you about the temperament of a particular breed and which one would be best suited for lifestyle and living situation.
o Make sure to keep your dog's vaccinations up to date. It is also important to closely monitor their overall health. Irritability often goes hand-in-hand with illness. Making sure your dog is healthy will insure that they are less likely to bite.
o Spend ample time with your pet. Dogs are extremely social animals and will often develop behavior problems if left alone for extended periods of time.
o Properly training your pet is essential to the prevention of dog bites. Teach your pet to "stay", "sit", "come" and "no" as well as incorporating fun games to aid in the formation of a bond of trust and obedience not only between you and your dog, but also between your dog and people in general. You do not want your pet to be perpetually leery or fearful of other humans, as this will make them more prone to bite out of fear or uncertainty.
Keeping Children Safe Around Dogs
Since young children are the number one victims of dog bites, parents and other adults should:
o Never leave a small child or baby unattended around a dog. No matter how sociable or well behaved the dog may appear, there is always the potential that they may bite. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
o Teach children, regardless the age, to be careful around animals. This includes teaching them to never approach an unfamiliar dog and to always ask permission from the dog owner before petting or touching their furry, four-legged friend.
o Be on guard for possible dangers.
There may come a time when you are faced with the potential of being bitten. In order to stay as safe as possible, there are certain things you need to know. Also, it is imperative to teach this information to your children as well.
When Dogs Attack
First, never approach a dog that is caring for their young, eating or sleeping. Female dogs are known to be extremely protective of their puppies. In order to guard against a potential bite, it would be best to leave them alone when they are nursing or otherwise caring for their puppies needs. Also, a dog startled from their sleep may bite instinctively as a protective response.
If you feel threatened by a dog, the best thing to do is remain calm. Do not make eye contact and slowly back away. Never turn and run, as dogs naturally love the thrill of the chase.
Lastly, if a dog does attack and you are forced to the ground, protect your face at all costs. Curl yourself into a ball and cover your face and neck with your hands and arms.

The problem of dog bites is reaching epidemic proportions. It has been noted that many attacks could have been prevented if only the owner was more responsible. Dog Bites - Causes and Warnings - Help For Owners of Older Dogs
As I conducted a thorough review of the literature on dog bites for this article, I discovered an interesting observation: the dog owner, trainer or breeder is more often than not, responsible for the presence of the factors that determine whether or not a dog will bite under specific circumstances. And, it's also human interaction that ultimately results in the dog's aggression. I suppose this could be the root of the adage "There's no such thing as a bad dog, only bad dog owners."
Causes
If you have a good handle on why a dog may bite you, you can often take the necessary precautions. So let's take a look at the reasons a dog may bite you.
Fear, surprise
Fear aggression can be caused by unexpected quick movements, loud noises, approaching the dog from a blind side, or abruptly waking a sleeping dog. Dogs that are already in an anxious or nervous state are more prone to biting from fear aggression. It's the "flight or fight" instinct. Not given the proper time or avenue to escape from the source of fear or surprise, the "fight" reaction will dominate. Children are most prone to being victimized by a fear biter because they don't understand the proper way to approach a dog.
Excitement, over exuberance
Rough housing with your dog is fun. Fun for you and your dog. However, when play gets too rough, the dog may begin playing with you the same way he plays with other dogs. Lacking hands, dogs resort to their mouth to grab. As the dog gets more and more excited, he may unintentionally bite his human playmate. Again, being the intelligent animal, it's up to us to know when play gets out of hand. Another scenario that may lead to an unintentional bite is an overly exuberant greeting. Again, a dog needs to be properly trained to exhibit restraint when company arrives.
Pain from sickness or injury
Pain causes confusion in a dog. Anyone who approaches a sick or injured dog risks being perceived as the source of the pain, and the dog may bite to stop the pain. When a dog is in pain, he doesn't understand where the pain comes from. If you touch him, he may think you are causing the pain and he could bite you to stop the pain. Senior dogs who are often afflicted with painful joints or teeth are very prone to pain-elicited aggression. In general, they'll have a lower tolerance to normally accepted, even welcomed behaviors of their human family members.
Protecting possessions or territory
Dominance aggression is aggressive behavior usually directed to family members who take something from the dog, or pet, hug, pick the dog up, or disturb the dog while it is resting.
Protective or territorial aggression can cause a dog to bite when an intruder (stranger or otherwise) encroaches or grabs a toy, bone, food bowl, blanket or any prized possession from the dog's personal space. Dogs will protect anything important to them or their own territory - like their bed, yard, house, even his car when he's riding in it. Dogs that are properly socialized will be less prone to dominance aggression, but to minimize the chances of being bitten by an overly protective dog, use common sense when approaching dogs.
Poorly trained, socialized and maintained or subjected to abuse and neglect
Dogs have the capacity more than most other species to display an exceptional synergistic relationship with humans. That is, they truly will display extreme loyalty towards an owner who in turn provides the dog with not just its basic needs, but does it with kindness and attentiveness. Conversely, dogs who have not been exposed to the nurturing of a loving home, who have not had a stable environment do not always tap into this capacity for loyalty. Without socialization, obedience training, and plain old love and affection, the wild instincts of survival will dominate. Dogs that have had to defend themselves against abuse and fend for themselves due to abandonment, will have a stronger tendency to bite.
Other causes
Sometimes we overestimate a dog's level of tolerance towards touching (especially ears, nose, tails). Children in particular also will innocently disturb a sleeping dog. A mother with puppies can exhibit overly protective aggression. If a dog is agitated by an unobvious disturbance and we approach we may be bitten from redirected aggression. All of these are scenarios that could result in a dog bite.
Warning Signs
Hopefully as a devoted owner, you will eventually be able to read your dog's moods. But these warning signs are useful to know when you approach an unfamiliar dog. This list isn't comprehensive but it includes the signs I consider most prevalent and the easiest to interpret.
The no-brainer sign - when a dog is growling or showing its teeth. Something is obviously troubling this dog. If its you doing something to the dog - stop doing it and give the dog his space.
Look for ears that are laid back against the dogs head, stiff legs if the dog is laying down, or the hair on the dog's nape of the neck is raised up. The dog is trying to warn you that he feels threatened and may feel the need to protect himself against approaching humans.
Dogs in numbers need to be approached more cautiously due to the pack mentality. Docile dogs have been known to become vicious when under the influence of other dogs.
A dog alone in his yard without the owner in sight can more easily exhibit dominance aggression or become very protective.
Some breeds, due to their "purpose in life" as prescribed by misguided owners are more prone towards aggressive behavior. Usually because they've been encouraged or trained to be so. Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Akitas, and Chows to name a few.
Tethered dogs are normally more prone to aggression probably because they feel less able to flee from a threat, so they resort to a defensive posture.
Forgive the profiling here, but facts do indicate that males bite more than females, and unneutered males more than neutered males.
Unfamiliarity certainly contributes to the incidence of dog bites. A dog new to a home, or a person new to the home that has had a dog resident for a period of time increases the chance that a bite will occur. As a rule-of-thumb, newness is normally considered within the first two or three months.
Once you pinpoint the reason or reasons for your dog's tendency to bite, you're in a good position to correct the negative behavior. Biting can be corrected in many cases.
